ELED 126 - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Teaching Social Studies

Semester Hours: 4
Fall, Spring
Interdisciplinary relationships between the social sciences and other disciplines are examined from their different conceptual frameworks and methods of inquiry, as well as the study of self in relation to social groups. Multicultural and global education, controversies and critical issues, sociodrama, cooperative group processes and other social models of teaching are considered. Developing appropriate experiences for children with handicapping conditions in the mainstream are studied. Students develop a repertoire of curriculum experiences and materials, and develop extended curriculum projects as well as the ability to facilitate children’s social development and the building of a class community. Students participate in the reflective study of their teaching under close clinical supervision in primary grades. Students must provide transportation to and from assigned placements.

Prerequisites & Course Notes:
ELED 125, including admission to the program in Elementary and Early Childhood Education, satisfactory completion of departmental writing examination, and distribution prerequisite in history. Corequisites: ELED 127 and the corresponding laboratory section of ELED 126. Credit given for this course or 126A, not both.
