HED 280E - Advanced Parenting as a Prevention ToolSemester Hours: 1.5 This workshop will introduce participants to the principles of the risk and protection model, the emerging research in which the resiliency paradigm is based, and how it connects with effective parenting. We will explore ways of increasing the protective factors that will shift the delicate balance from vulnerability to resiliency in the lives of children. This workshop will assist participants to:
- Understand the risk and protection model and the importance of a strength-based approach in the home setting.
- Become familiar with the underlying resiliency research.
- Understand the practical application of a strength-based approach in the field of alcohol and substance abuse prevention in the home and in the school.
- Understand the role that individual protective factors play in fostering resiliency.
- Understand the role media plays in influencing children.
