MATH 298U - Algebraic Theory of NumbersSemester Hours: 3 This course concerns Unique Factorization Domains, Euclidean Domains, Gaussian Integers, Fermat’s Last Theorem, Rings of Integers, Dedekind domains, unique factorization of ideals, the ideal class group, Computing the ring of integers in a number field, Kummer’s theorem on factoring ideals, the splitting of primes, Cyclotomic Fields, The field Q_p, Absolute values, Hensel’s Lemma, Introductory p-adic analysis, Application to Diophantine equations.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Matriculation into the graduate mathematics program or permission of the graduate coordinator/instructor. Course is cross-listed with MATH 198U .
