BIO 173 - Introduction to Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics unites biology with computer science, math and statistics. More specifically, the field explores how vast amounts of biological data (for example, DNA and protein sequences, 3-dimensional structures, and chromosomal mapping) are stored, accessed, manipulated, and most importantly, used to answer biological questions. Students will learn how the major international bioinformatics databases are organized and utilized to obtain information relevant to fields such as molecular biology, genetics, medicine, evolution and conservation biology. Bioinformatics searches and applications are based on probabilistic algorithms; therefore, students will learn to interpret and evaluate the statistical parameters associated with each methodology.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
BIO 11 , 12 .  Open to students with at least one year of introductory biology. No credit awarded if student has credit for CSC 121 . Can be used to fulfill the biostatistics requirement for the B.S. in biology . May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis.
