SPLT 59 - (CC, LT) Farewell to Columbus: Rethinking the Latin American HeritageSemester Hours: 3 Periodically
This course re-examines Latin American cultures from pre- Columbian
times to independence, ‘decolonizing’ our understanding of Latin
America and using under-explores sources such as private letters,
sermons, travel accounts, business treaties and indigenous literature,
as well as carved stones, maps, textiles, and art. It also reexamines
classic texts (including the diaries and letters of Columbus, Cortes’
writings to the king of Spain, and accounts of Pizarro’s role in the
conquest of the Inca Empire) from a new perspective, questioning
received colonial myths.
