SPAN 217 - Writing and Violence: Testimonial Narratives and the Construction of Memory in Latin America

Semester Hours: 3
Periodically
The course addresses testimonial narratives from the last thirty years in Latin America from a multidisciplinary perspective. Through these literary and historical accounts, writers, activists, and intellectuals—often the victims of human rights abuses themselves—have sought an alternative strategy for recording, and simultaneously defying, state violence. Humor, irony, and satire, all of which leave an indisputable imprint on these discourses, will be analyzed in depth. Finally, the course will assess the role of the media, in terms of their potential solidarity with the victims or, conversely, their complicity in censorship, propaganda and state terror.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
