NCS 162 - (CC, IS) Beyond the Border: Journey to the Heart of Mexico

Semester Hours: 2-4
January
This interdisciplinary course takes place in Mexico and provides an intensive introduction to contemporary Mexico’s historical, political, and cultural life. It focuses on the economic and political forces at work in the current restructuring of Mexican society. We examine the implications of the growing globalization of the region, including evolving indigenous peoples’ movements. Additionally, we explore some of the values, traditions and conceptions of education in modern Mexico contrasted with those of its indigenous civilizations. The course includes site visits to Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Zapotec ruins.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Permission of instructor. No credit for this course or SGG 30. May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis.
