LAW 2979 - Technology-Based Analysis of Legal Reasoning

This course will provide both theory and practice in developing the logic skills needed to analyze legal reasoning in domestic, foreign and international legal decisions. The focus on the logical structure of judicial reasoning enables decisions in different languages and different legal systems to be compared within a single, common framework. Topics will include the logical modeling of legal rules, the application of rules to particular cases, inferences from evidence to factual findings, and the assessment of the strength of proof. The substantive examples used will supplement the materials studied in the course on “Comparative Health Care Liability.” In addition, the logical analysis enables portions of the task to be automated using computer software, and communicated using the Internet. Students will learn how to use the Legal ApprenticeTM software to model judicial reasoning.

Prerequisites & Notes
No pre-requisites; co-requisites are the other two courses in Module 1 (Comparative Health Care Liability and Comparative Health Care Regulation).
