LAW 3819 - NY Insurance Litigation Externship

This new specialized externship is designed to provide students with a substantive educational experience in insurance law, while at the same time offering students an opportunity to apply what they are learning within the context of an externship setting. Exposure to insurance litigation and practice is not an area in which students can traditionally gain experience in not-for-profit or government placements. Students will be required to enroll in the two-credit course in Insurance Law, as well as the three-credit New York Insurance Litigation Externship. The Externship is open to second and third year law students. Students will apply their training in the substantive law by working collaboratively with practicing industry specialists and expert insurance counsel to foster a broad growth of real-world knowledge and to learn practical aspects of handling corporate client matters, although none of the students’ work will be billable to paying clients.  Students will work on a variety of matters in both traditional and newly expanding legal and regulatory issues that confront the insurance industry. Participants will be assigned to receive one-on-one practical skills training and supervision from attorneys in various legal settings, including the office of General Counsel at Country-Wide Insurance Company and a leading insurance defense firm.
