The rise of this popular genre in the century that mainly invented it, in subgenres involving forms of autobiography, journalism, satire, epic, romance in general, and Gothic romance in particular, by such authors as Defoe, the Fieldings, Richardson, Sterne, Smollett, Burney, and Austen.

ENGL 1 and 2. Open only to students who have fulfilled the English Proficiency Exam requirement.
