CLL 151 - (LT) Studies in Literature: Marxism and Literature: Class Conflict and Plenty of It

Semester Hours: 3
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, revolutionary thinkers and activists, saw the conflict between the one percent and the 99 percent (more or less) as the driving force in the production of historical change. And both felt that such change would make itself felt in the artistic sphere, especially literature. In this class we will look at both Marx’s and Engels’ ideas about the relationship of literature to history/historical change and also look at some works of literature from the two men’s perspectives. We will concentrate on works from the 20th century. We will read and discuss B. Traven’s novel of brutal exploitation in the mahogany plantation of Chiapas, The March to the Monteria, Takiji Kobayashi’s novel of brutal exploitation, The Factory Ship, Charles Bukowski’s novel, Factotum of mild exploitation (but exploitation none the less!). We will read the poetry of Bertolt Brecht, Charles Bukowski, Antler, and others.
