LAW 3922 - Mediation Principles and Practice

Winter Intersession and Summer Session 1
This is an intensive skills training course conducted primarily during the January intersession and Summer Session 1 for a class of no more than 25 participants. The course introduces students to mediation theory, principles and practice skills at a basic, generic level, and also addresses the specifics of family mediation practice (divorce, custody, etc.). The course is taught in an intensive five-day program, including lectures, discussion, exercises and simulations. Attendance at the entire five-day program is required for course credit.

Students gain a basic familiarity with the skills needed for mediation practice, skills that are also of value in many other areas of lawyering and client counseling. Students who complete the course successfully also receive certificates that qualify them to apply to work as volunteer mediators in any of the 50+ state-supervised mediation centers located throughout New York state.

The course is taught by Law School faculty members, assisted by experienced mediation trainer-practitioners. Course enrollment is limited.
