Law 3832 - Mediation Externship

Students in the Mediation Externship will serve as mediators in disputes between parents and children as part of the Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS) diversion program and with parents with either child support or custody and visitation cases that are before the family court in Nassau. Student mediators will help parties in conflict negotiate and make decisions about the conflict’s outcome. Students will also have the opportunity to observe mediations in a community mediation center and civil court in Jamaica, Queens. The students will, on average, be assigned to attend one mediation session a week.

The mediations will take place on-site at a referring court or agency. Under the clinical instructor’s supervision, students will: interview parties to a dispute and advise them about the mediation process, mediate cases in two student teams, and draft settlement agreements. The fieldwork placement component of the externship will require 5-6 hours of work. In addition, the students will attend a 2-hour seminar (LAW 3833 - MEDIATION EXTERNSHIP SEMINAR)  that will include intensive skills exercises and simulated mediations.
