REHB 267 - Psychosocial Aspects of Disabilities

Semester Hours: 3
Spring
The purpose of this course is to explore the psychosocial and psychological aspects of disability. The experience of living with a disability is constructed differently for each person depending on a number of factors. Some of these are internal, psychological factors, such as personality characteristics or coping skills. Others are external, psychosocial factors that are inherent in the structure of society and the nature of interactions between individuals. This course will seek to explore these relationships as they relate to living the disability experience. Topics will include disability identity formation, the adaptation process, coping, dealing with grief and loss, self-concept and self-esteem, and public perceptions of disability; the disability experience related to specific disabilities will also be explored. Issues related to vocational selection and placement, community integration, personal and familial relationships, sexuality, and spirituality will be addressed. The use of resources and service options will be considered, along with the specialized knowledge and rehabilitation techniques needed to deal with these issues.
