LAW 3822 - Externship Program, Civil Law In this course, students’ civil placements can include judicial chambers, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, legal counsel offices of corporations, and law firms. Each student works 12 hours per week at the assigned office, and must produce a minimum of 25 pages of substantial written work based upon legal research over the course of the semester. The course includes a weekly one-hour seminar in which students examine substantive and ethical legal issues that have arisen during their placements and participate in professional skills exercises and weekly written assignments. The faculty supervisor is also in contact with the attorney in charge of each placement during the semester to ensure the continued quality of the placement. This course may be taken only once by a student. The students’ field placement work is graded on a pass/fail basis and students receive a letter grade for the seminar component.
