NUR 271 - Principles of Evidence-based Diagnostic Testing Semester Hours: 2 This course is designed to prepare the advanced practice nurse with a well-grounded understanding of the principles required for ordering and interpreting commonly used diagnostic testing, including, but not limited to, serum (blood) tests, urine tests, conventional radiographs, computed tomography with and without contrast enhancement, nuclear medicine diagnostic tests, basic ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Particular focus will be paid to the indications, contraindications, precautions, adverse effects, risks, benefits, sensitivities, specificities, limitations, and evidence-basis guiding the use of the tests and modalities discussed. How diagnostic testing is influenced by epidemiology and prevalence of disease, the patient population served, practitioner pre-test probability, and independent test characteristics, will be explored. Upon completion of this elective, the advanced practice nursing student will have a richer understanding of how to use these tests (and the results generated from them) to support the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients in both the inpatient and ambulatory care environments.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: For Graduate Nursing Majors only.
