LAW 3977 - State and Local Government

This offering, often taught as a seminar, provides a survey of the structures and powers of state and substate government and government agencies. Topics include organization and operation of local governments, sources of their powers, and judicial review of their actions; the relationships among local, state and federal policies, including state controls, constitutional limitations and home rule; and the role of public authorities and regional bodies. The offering is cross-disciplinary in character. In addition to a more conventional treatment of problems of state and federal constitutional law, this offering aims to illuminate very useful theoretical perspectives drawn from the literature of politics and political economy in particular.
