The Department of Writing Studies and Composition introduces students in all majors to the variety of academic writing required of them during their university years and the variety of professional writing they are likely to face in the workplace. The department’s faculty members are dedicated to guiding students toward an appreciation of the benefits of effective writing and critical reading and thinking skills. Through its own growing curriculum and through cross-listed courses, the department offers an array of courses in expository, technical and professional writing as well as the history, structure, and grammar of the English language. In addition, the department provides tutorial services in writing to all members of the Hofstra community through the Writing Center and administers the Writing Proficiency Examination, a University requirement for graduation.
