The writing studies minor provides instruction in effective composition for both academic and professional settings. To this end, students will create written texts and may craft multimedia productions that incorporate image, sound, and hypertext. Students in the program may take courses in three major areas: professional writing, composition and rhetoric, and new media literacy.

The writing minor complements course work in a variety of majors, and prepares students for careers that value clear and effective composition skills. Students with a minor in writing studies will also be well-equipped for graduate or professional study in fields such as business, law, education, and other writing-intensive disciplines.

Program Requirements

A minor in writing studies consists of the successful completion of 18 s.h., with at least 9 s.h. in-residence. All writing studies minors must register with the department. Courses are taken after consultation with an advisor. All students will take a minimum of 18 s.h. chosen from at least two of the following areas:

Note

Writing Studies and Composition FYC seminars (014F  and 014S  courses) may also count towards fulfilling the minor requirement in Writing Studies and Composition. These seminars will be assigned to one of the above categories based on their topics of concern.
