The Sociology Department provides its majors, minors, and other students with a rigorous and intellectually grounded understanding of the social world.  Our program is rooted in sociological theory and the scientific method, and it fosters the development of analytical skills that allow for the practice and evaluation of social research.  The Department is committed to using these tools to understand and address social problems and inequalities in global, institutional, and interpersonal social contexts.  Students are also encouraged to explore their own position in and relationship to society. The skills and knowledge developed in the study of sociology are applicable to a broad range of settings, including the public and private sectors, especially in the pursuit of advanced academic and professional degrees.
