BS-BA/MD Dual-degree Program


The BS-BA/MD dual-degree program is an eight-year, combined program. Students admitted into this program pursue a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at Hofstra University. Upon completion of their undergraduate degree, they have the opportunity to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University.

Admission


Entry into this dual-degree program is highly selective. Since a limited number of students will be admitted, only those who demonstrate superior high school achievement and academic aptitude and who apply to Hofstra as first-time, full-time freshmen will be considered.

Applicants are expected to have:

  • Scored well on their college entrance exams, demonstrating a minimum of 1410 (Critical Reading and Math sections) SAT or 32 ACT.
  • A minimum 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating class (if applicable).
  • Complete the CASPer®/Altus exam by mid-January. For more information and to research your testing date, visit takealtus.com.

To be considered for the dual degree program, applicants must have a minimum of 18 units of high school credit; a unit represents one year of work in a subject. Within those 18 units, the following must be included:

  • Mathematics (with calculus), 4 units
  • Social science, 4 units
  • Chemistry, 1 unit
  • Physics, 1 unit
  • Biology, 1 unit
  • English, 4 units
  • Foreign Language, 2 units

The Undergraduate Admission Committee will invite applicants who meet the above criteria to submit the supplemental dual degree program application including an essay by February 15. After the admissions committee reviews the supplemental application, selected candidates will be invited to interview with members of the Medical School Admissions Committee. Selected candidates will be notified of admission to the dual degree program by April 1. Applicants not offered admission to the dual-degree program will be encouraged to enroll in other undergraduate programs at Hofstra.

Students will be advised by the Center for University Advisement during the undergraduate phase of the dual-degree program.

Matriculation


Matriculation into the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine occurs upon completion of the baccalaureate undergraduate degree provided the student:

  • Obtains a minimum Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score equivalent to the 80th percentile on the first attempt must be achieved and submitted by January of the medical school application cycle.
  • Maintains a minimum 3.6 overall GPA and 3.6 science GPA in the undergraduate portion of the curriculum.
  • Does not repeat a course.
  • Receives no grade less than a B in any science course, and no grade less than a C in a non-science course.
  • Satisfies all pre-medical curriculum requirements.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professional behavior.
  • Completes one of the following academic enrichment options:
    • Participates in Rabinowitz Honors College earning full graduation status.

    • Earns a minor in one of the following areas:  disability studies; global studies; medicine, culture and society; philosophy, psychology, religion or sociology.  Other minors are possible upon approval.  A minor in biochemistry does not count toward this requirement.  Students in engineering can select a minor in math, or another area of interest pending approval from the academic advisor.

    • Completes at least two semesters of a foreign language followed by a study abroad experience in a country where that language is spoken.
