Students majoring in English select a concentration, either in Literatures in English, Children’s and Young Adult Literature, Creative Writing and Literature, or Publishing Studies. Students who choose the Literatures in English concentration take a wide variety of courses in literature, organized around issues, authors, genres, or historical periods. Students who choose the Creative Writing and Literature concentration divide their course work between literature courses and workshops in writing prose, poetry, drama, essays, screenplays, and children’s literature. Students who choose the Publishing Studies concentration divide their course work between literature courses and courses in which they study the history and practice of publishing and the skills and techniques that are essential in the publishing industry. Students who choose the Children’s and Young Adult Literature concentration complete course work in literature, creative writing, publishing studies, and psychology to develop the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the field of children’s literature as writers, critics, and/or editors.

Program Requirements: Total Semester Hours: 124
94 semester hours in liberal arts courses.
Students may not count more than 45 semester hours in English (ENGL) and creative writing (CRWR) courses toward the 124 credits for the BA. Coursework for the English major may also simultaneously complete literature (LT), creative participation (CP), and cross-cultural (CC) distribution requirements for the BA degree.

A. Literatures in English - Semester Hours: 24
1. An additional two courses in Literary Foundations - Semester Hours: 6
2. Junior/Senior Seminar - Semester Hours: 3
Majors must take ENGL 194 in their junior or senior year.
3. Pre-1800 Electives - Semester Hours: 6
At least 6 semester hours of ENGL courses dealing with literature written before 1800 selected from the list below.
4. Pre-1900 Electives - Semester Hours: 3
At least 3 semester hours of ENGL literature courses dealing with literature written before 1900 selected from the list below.
5. Major Electives - Semester Hours: 6
At least 6 semester hours of creative writing, literature, or publishing electives are chosen from any CRWR, ENGL, and PUBL courses. Up to 6 s.h. may be taken in CLL 191, 195, 199 or DRAM 173, 174, 175, or 176, or in literature or linguistics courses offered by other departments, chosen under advisement.
