The BA degree provides a general overview of the geosciences and is suitable for students with an interest in the topic who do not intend to pursue a career in research or graduate study in geoscience (for these career paths a BS degree is recommended). The BA in Geology prepares students for careers in science education (when combined with an education degree) or for careers in science journalism, law, or public policy, particularly when combined with a complementary major or minor.
Students enrolling in this major should meet with the department chair to plan their program of study prior to registering for courses.
Four additional advanced geology courses (GEOL 018 and above) selected with approval of chairperson. (Note: Minimum grade of C- required in all geology courses.)
Introductory natural science courses
Additional natural science courses are recommended, including courses in meteorology and astronomy. This program is intended for liberal arts-oriented students and those planning to teach earth science in high schools (for additional information, see Science Education, BA Major in).
