At least 62 semester hours of liberal arts courses. At least 55 of these credits must be completed in courses other than mathematics.

3. Residence Requirements

There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. General Requirements

  • Humanities electives, 6 s.h. of distribution courses including:
    1. 3 semester hours from the appreciation and analysis category
    2. 3 semester hours from the creative participation category Foreign language (same as for B.A.)
  • Social science electives, 6 s.h. of distribution courses including:
    1. 3 semester hours from behavioral sciences
    2. 3 semester hours from history and philosophy Physics 11A and B.(For listing of distribution courses, see Distribution Courses program.)

5. Mathematics Requirements

The successful completion of all mathematics courses required for the B.A. in Mathematics including the courses listed below, 3 additional hours in intermediate or advanced mathematics numbered 100 or above, and 9 additional hours in advanced mathematics numbered 110 or above, chosen under advisement.

6. Options Requirements

The successful completion of one of the options listed below. It is the intent of the science options to allow students interested in the applications of mathematics to develop that interest.

Mathematics Option

Completion of 9 additional hours of advanced mathematics courses, chosen under advisement.

Actuarial Science Option

Completion of ACCT 101, 102; ECO 1, 2; FIN 101, 110; and QM 122.  The advanced mathematics courses must include MATH 137 and 138.  MATH 103 and QM 150 are also strongly recommended.  (Note:  Students who complete all of these courses in ACCT, ECO, FIN, and QM with a grade of B- or better will receive validation by Educational Experience Credit from the Society of Actuaries.)

Applied Mathematics Option

Completion of 9 additional hours of advanced mathematics, including within the program at least four courses selected from MATH 137 & 138, 141 & 142, 147, 163 and 165. Demonstrated ability in computer applications, a requirement which may be met by MATH 147, CSC 16, or an appropriate project within another mathematics class.

Chemistry Option

Completion of CHEM 3A & 4A, 3B & 4B, 141 & 142.

See footnote **

Engineering Option

Completion of PHYS 11A & 12A, 11B, 12B, and at least 9 hours of ENGG with MATH 29 or 131 as a prerequisite or corequisite.

See footnote **

Physics Option

Completion of PHYS 11A & 12A, 11B, 12B, plus 2 courses selected from PHYS 104, 118, 140. All mathematics courses and all advanced courses in other areas presented toward the fulfillment of the B.S. in Mathematics must be completed with a minimum grade of C-.

Footnotes

** Completion of this option automatically fulfills the natural science requirements (in 4 above).
