Addiction Studies, C.A.S.

The Marriage and Family Therapy Programs in the Department of Health Professions and Family Studies of Hofstra University offer a unique approach to the study of chemical dependence.  In keeping with the programs’ philosophy, chemical dependence is studied within a family context utilizing a systemic framework of understanding. All of the core clinical courses are designed to provide an integrative understanding of addiction and its impact on the family; from assessment, through intervention and treatment.  In addition, the program is designed in accordance with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) regulations and will  prepare the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for the New York State examination for Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor  (CASAC).

Admission Requirements


  1. A master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, psychology, counseling, or social work from an accredited institution, or
  2. Students enrolled in a master’s program working toward a degree. The Certificate in Addictive Studies will be awarded when the student has fulfilled the degree requirements for the master’s degree and the advanced certificate.
  3. Three letters of recommendation.
  4. A detailed resume of professional, clinical and related experiences.
  5. All candidates are interviewed by a faculty member to assess depth of knowledge and practice skills.

Prerequisite Requirements


Students will be evaluated by a faculty member in terms of the their general background in the social sciences and level of psychological maturity.  

Graduation Requirements



  1. Students must satisfactorily complete all course work with a B or better in each course. This is determined by class participation, assignments, class examinations and attendance (see the specifics for each course).
  2. Students are responsible for completing the student practicum hours in Addiction Studies.
  3. Students must be computer and Internet literate.
  4. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of each course.
