The Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Technology is intended for certified K-12 teachers. The certificate provides advanced studies in the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of educational technologies. The program is based on the foundation of research and practice concerned with the development and use of educational technology for meaningful learning. Consistent with this mission, special emphasis is placed on designing innovative ways of using technology to help students relate new experiences and ideas to what they already know. Therefore, the purpose of the Certificate in Educational Technology is to meet the needs of educators aspiring to become leaders in educational technology. Consistent with that mission the program will:

  • prepare students to use technology to transform teaching, learning and the curriculum.
  • help students develop the expertise needed to identify, analyze, and solve learning problems with the use of educational technology in a variety of settings.
  • help students develop the expertise to design educational technology tools that can be implemented in a classroom environment. 
  • help students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies in state-of-the-art facilities.

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Technology conforms with the recommendation for teacher preparation by the International Society for Technology in Education and in particular with the National Educational Technology Standards.

Admission Requirements

Prospective students must have:
1.    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution,
2.    Teaching certification, and
3.    An overall grade point average of 2.75 or higher in all course work.

Prerequisite Requirements – Semester Hours: 3

Program Requirements – Semester Hours: 15-18

(Students who have not completed CT 200 as previous study will be required to take it as part of the program.)

Students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 while in the program. Grades of D or lower will not be counted toward the graduate degree but will be included in determining the grade point average.

Graduation Requirements

  1. Completion of program requirements.
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate course work.
  3. Satisfactory completion of a departmental-approved curriculum project, to be completed in CT 212.
  4. An electronic portfolio illustrating the student’s educational technology course work and professional accomplishments. Students will be required to submit and present the electronic portfolio at the Educational Technology Showcase held at  Hofstra University annually.
