This undergraduate major program is designed to prepare preservice physical education teachers to be scholarly, highly skilled, reflective practitioners able to meet the needs of students with a diversity of needs, experiences, cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and special abilities in all grades. The program focuses attention on the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable the preservice teacher to develop and implement effective, innovative physical education programs that meet the New York State Learning Standards in schools. Successful completion of all program requirements will lead to the University’s recommendation for Initial Certification in physical education.

Matriculation
For provisional acceptance into the physical education major program, the following
are required:
- Admission into Hofstra University.
- An interview with the program coordinator for advisement and scheduling.
Program Requirements
Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements: 1. Total Semester Hours: 129
Successful completion of at least 129 semester hours and a cumulative grade point
average of 2.5 in work completed at Hofstra. 2. Liberal Arts Requirements
At least 63 semester hours must be in liberal arts. 3. Residence Requirements
There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 25 hours in the major field of specialization, including: PESP 103, 155A, 104, 155B, 130A, 130B, 138A, 170, 170A, and the last 30 hours. The 25 hours need not be included within the last 30 hours. 4. General Education Requirement - Total Semester Hours: 52

5. Physical Education Skills Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 8
6. Activity Electives - Total Semester Hours: 4
a. Sport skills: Select at least one course from each of the following categories (2.5 s.h.)
- Net and wall sports: PESP 3A , 33A , 36A or others as approved by the program coordinator.
- Target sports: PESP 2A , 7A , 9A , 14A or others as approved by the program coordinator.
- Outdoor/leisure pursuits: PESP 45 , 46 or others as approved by the program coordinator.
- Striking/fielding sports and personal performance sports: PESP 27A , 34A , 39A or others as approved by the program coordinator.
- Team passing sports: PESP 5A , 8A , 10A , 16 , 26A or others as approved by the program coordinator.
b. Additional elective courses (1.5 s.h.):
- Electives chosed from any of the sport skills categories above.
- Aquatics: PESP 31 , 42 , 131 , 143 (must meet prerequisites). Students completing PESP 42 and/or PESP 143 may substitute these classes for additional required activity credits at the discretion of the program coordinator.
- Dance: PESP 111B and courses offered in the dance department as approved by the program coordinator.
7. Physical Education Content Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 42
Admission to the Physical Education Pedagogy Sequence
Students who have declared physical education as their major must meet the following standards in order to be admitted to the physical education pedagogy sequence:
- Complete all required major activity couirses and at least six elective major activity courses with a grade of C- or better and a cumulative GPA of 2.75 in activity courses.
- Complete the following courses with a grade of C- or better, and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in physical education content courses.
Pedagogy Sequence Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 22
Coaching Internship Requirement
Students must complete an independent internship experience coaching a middle school or high school interscholoastic team for at least one season (or other similar experience as approved by the program coordinator). A letter from the school district verifying the student’s participation is required for completion of this requirement. Continuation Requirements
Students who have declared physical education as their major must meet the following standards in order to continue in the program:
- A minimum GPS of 2.5 or better in the following categories:
- all course work completed at Hofstra University
- required physical education content course work
- A minimum GPS of 2.75 or better in required physical education skill and pedagogy course work.
Student Teaching Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 9
To be admitted to student teaching, students must meet the following requirements:
- Meet all continuation requirements as outlined above;
- receive a grade of C- or better in SPCM 1 ;
- complete FDED 111 or 127 ; CT 102 ; PESP 103 , 155A , 104 , 155B , 135 , 136 , 170 , 170A ; no Ds, Fs or unresolved incompletes in major courses;
- a minimum GPA of 2.75 in required physical education pedagogy courses.
The following student teaching courses are required: Graduation Requirements
Graduation from the program requires:
- Completion of criteria listed above;
- no grades lower than C- and no unresolved INC grades physical education skills, content, or pedagogy course work;
- a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better in overall course work and in physical education content course work;
- a minimum GPA of 2.75 in physical education skills and pedagogy course work;
- successful completion of all other degree requirements; and
- fulfillment of all Education Law seminars.
All requirements must be completed before the conferral of the degree and recommendation for certification. Teacher Certification Requirements
Upon the successful completion of a teacher education program, students will be eligible to apply for the University’s recommendation for New York State certification. For Initial Certification, students are required to have passing scores on each of the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE): the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the Assessment of Teaching Skills—Written (ATS-W), and the Physical Education Content Specialty Test. Students not receiving passing scores on three examinations, will not be eligible for certification. Note
It is strongly recommended that students complete the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) of the New York State Certification Examinations prior to student teaching and the Assessment of Teaching Skills—Written (ATS-W) during student teaching. All New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) should be completed prior to graduation. Students not receiving passing scores on both examinations will not be eligible for certification. Footnotes
