Qualified undergraduate Spanish or latin american and caribbean studies (LACS) majors may choose to take a dual-degree B.A. in Spanish or latin american and caribbean studies (LACS)/M.A. in Spanish. They must be conditionally accepted into the graduate program before being eligible to take up to four graduate-level courses (12 s.h.) under advisement as part of the undergraduate program. These courses are credited to both the B.A. and the M.A.
Students need to complete a total of 145 s.h.: 112 s.h. of undergraduate course work and 33 s.h. of graduate course work. All undergraduate requirements (distribution, language and composition) remain the same as those for a B.A. in Spanish or LACS .

Undergraduate Spanish/LACS Requirements
The B.A. requires 33 s.h. in Spanish or latin american and caribbean studies (LACS) (See specific requirements under B.A. in Spanish or B.A. in LACS . For LACS students, a total of at least 6 s.h. in Spanish above SPAN 5 are required at the time of application to the dual-degree program.) Graduate Requirements
The M.A. requires 33 s.h. in Spanish, as follows:
- 6 s.h. in culture courses: SPAN 205, 206 or 218; or equivalent.
- 6 s.h. in courses related to literature and criticism: SPAN 203, 204; or equivalent.
- 6 s.h. in language grammar or linguistics courses.
- 3 s.h. in a course on major authors or literary movements: SPAN 221 A-Z, 222 A-Z, 223 A-Z, 224 A-Z, 225 A-Z or 226 A-Z.
- 9 s.h. of any other 200-level courses in SPAN.
- 3 s.h. for the master’s essay (prior to registering for SPAN 301, the candidate must consult with the graduate program director and make necessary arrangements with the department faculty who will supervise the essay).
Undergraduate majors in Spanish or latin american and caribbean studies may apply for admission to the dual-degree program through the Graduate Admission Office, after completing a minimum of 75 undergraduate credits. The minimum requirements for acceptance in the program are a) a GPA of 3.0 overall and b) a GPA of 3.0 in the major (Spanish or LACS), at the time of application. Eligible undergraduate students must be accepted into the dual-degree program before registering for graduate courses. Students are encouraged to apply during the second semester of their junior year. Full acceptance into the M.A. program is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all requirements for the B.A.
