B.S. Specialization in Athletic Training

This undergraduate major program is designed to prepare students for
employment in the profession of athletic training. The curriculum
is designed to meet the entry-level athletic training competencies and
proficiencies identified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
Education Council. The program fulfills all of the requirements
established by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs (CAAHEP). This program is designated by CAAHEP
as probationary accreditation. Admission to the program is competitive.

Pre-Athletic Training Phase
Students in the Pre-Athletic Training Phase are eligible to apply to
the Athletic Training program after they have successfully
completed BIO 103, 105; PESP 60, 169 with grades of C- or better.
Students must maintain a 2.5 overall grade point average and a 2.75
grade point average within the Athletic Training major.
Admission to the Athletic Training Program
To become matriculated, students must submit an application, a
personal essay, two letters of recommendation, official
transcripts, current CPR and First Aid certificates, physical and
immunization records, and complete a Technical Standards Form available
from the Physical Education and Sport Sciences Department.
Applicants must interview successfully with
the Program Director and one faculty member. Applicants must also
complete the clinical observation hours required for PESP 169.
Finally, applicants must pass the psychomotor skills tests required in
PESP 169.
Upon the recommendation of the Athletic Training Program Coordinator,
final admission to the program will be made by the Chairperson of the
Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. Students will
receive written notice of their acceptance into the program. Applicants
who do not meet the program requirements will be counseled about other
academic programs.
Continuation Standards
Upon completion of the sophomore year, all athletic training majors must meet the following criteria to continue in the program:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better in
all course work and a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 in all
athletic training major courses indicated by the symbol “+”.
Students who do not maintain the required average(s) will be placed on
probation for one semester. Students whose averages fail to
meet program requirements after one semester’s probation, may be
dropped from the program.
- Completion of clinical experience courses. Students are
required to complete a series of clinical experiences that are course
co-requisites to required courses and are described in course syllabi.
Students must earn grades of C- or better to progress to the next
clinical level.
Clinical Experience
Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 1,000 clinical hours with the following
restrictions:
- All clinical hours must be under the direct supervision of a certified athletic
trainer.
- Students will have exposure to upper, and lower extermity injuries in addition
to equipment intensive sports and general medical conditions for both male and
female athletes.
- Students should expect to travel with respective clinical assignments. This could
include travel by bus and plane in addition to weekend travel.
- Students will have clinical assignments in off campus settings and will need
to provide either their own transportation or use public transportation.
- All clinical hours must be accumulated in a period of not less than two, and
no more than five years.
Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 128
Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements: 1. The Successful Completion of 128 Semester Hours
128 s.h. of prescribed clinical experience and course work. 2. Liberal Arts: at least 64 s.h.
Note: No more than 12 semester hours of liberl arts electives may be taken on
a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis. 3. Residence Requirements
There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in
residence at Hofstra University: 15 semester hours in the major field
of specialization, including one off-campus experience and the last 40
hours. The 15 hours need not be included within the last 30 hours. 4. The following general requirements
