This program is designed to broaden the theoretical and practical knowledge of individuals involved in all aspects of working with adult or college-level non-native speakers of English, including teaching, materials development, and publishing or related areas. The program shares a common core of courses with the Master of Science in Education program leading to primary and secondary school certification in TESOL for New York state.

Admission Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a background in linguistics and a major in TESOL, English, a foreign language, linguistics, reading or other related area.
- Proficiency in English including reading, writing, and speaking.
- 12 semester hours of foreign language study or the equivalent.
- A letter of recommendation from a college instructor and an interview with the graduate program director.
- If the student’s background shows deficiencies in foreign language study or linguistics, admission will be conditional until deficiencies are made up by taking some undergraduate courses without graduate credit, as specified by the adviser.

B. Linguistic Component - Semester Hours: 9
2. Applied Linguistics Track - Semester Hours: 12
3. Recommended Electives - Semester Hours: 6
To be chosen under advisement, according to student’s interests: Graduation Requirements
- The completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours, of which a total of 30 must
be taken in the primary courses and linguistic track.
- Completion of a supervised research project in conjunction with the LING 299
seminar course.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate course work.
