Sustainability Studies, BS Major in

The BS major in Sustainability Studies allows students to complete a broad-based interdisciplinary course of study with required concentrations in sustainability, in the natural sciences, and in mathematics, and with a selection of relevant electives from across the curriculum.

Program Requirements

  1. Completion of 58-60 s.h. of course work as outlined below, consisting of 24 s.h. of required courses in sustainability, geology, geography, and technology and public policy (see below); 17-19 s.h. of science requirements (see below); 6-8 s.h. of mathematics requirements (see below); and 9 s.h. of electives, selected from the list of courses specified below. Courses with grades lower than a C- do not count toward the total number of hours required for the sustainability studies major.
  2. At least 15 s.h. must be completed in-residence.
  3. At least 65 s.h. must be completed in liberal arts course work. The humanities and social science electives must be satisfied with approved distribution courses:

Sustainability Core - Semester Hours: 24

Science Requirements - Semester Hours: 17-19

Mathematics Requirements - Semester Hours: 6-8

Complete 6-8 s.h. of course work, chosen from the following:

Elective Courses - Semester Hours: 9

Select 9 s.h. from the courses listed below.

NOTE: Prior to taking elective courses, see adviser to develop a course plan. Click on course titles listed below to access course descriptions and check prerequisites, as well as scheduling information (in order to ensure eligibility to enroll and proper completion of academic background courses). Note that not all courses are offered every semester. Courses taken to fulfill elective requirements must be different from courses taken to fulfill Core and Science requirements for the degree.
