Bilingual Extension in Speech-Language Pathology, Adv. Cert.

This Advanced Certificate includes all requirements for Option II of the MA in Speech-Language Pathology  as well as preparation for NYS certification as an elementary, middle or secondary teacher.

On average, students complete this program in one academic year.


There are two routes to obtaining the Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Extension in Speech-Language Pathology:

1. Students currently matriculated in the MA Program in Speech-Language Pathology  

  1. Satisfy all requirements for Option II.
  2. SPCH 262S  must be completed in a bilingual placement.
  3. Complete SPCH 265  and 266 .
  4. Satisfy New York state language competency requirement in the chosen language.
  5. Students who hold initial certification in Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities  (TSSLD) must complete the above course work at the graduate level even if similar course work was completed at the undergraduate level.

2. Students not currently matriculated in the MA Program in Speech-Language Pathology  

  1. Must have earned a master’s degree in speech-language pathology.
  2. Must satisfy all requirements for New York state teacher certification in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD).
  3. Demonstrate completion of practicum in a bilingual setting, or complete SPCH 262S  in a bilingual setting.
  4. Complete SPCH 265  and 266 .
  5. Complete additional course work as necessary under advisement of the graduate program director.
  6. Satisfy New York state language competency requirement in the chosen language.
  7. Students who hold initial or professional certification in TSSLD  must complete the above course work at the graduate level even if similar course work was completed at the undergraduate level.
