This Advanced Certificate program prepares elementary school teachers for on-site positions as elementary school mathematics specialists who serve as resources to their peer teachers. They will be prepared in mathematics content, pedagogical alternatives, reform-based curriculum, multiple assessment methodologies and leadership skills.

This program is intended for teachers who have a master’s degree, are currently certified in elementary education and who are seeking continued professional development. Students who complete this program will:

  • Know mathematics, elementary curriculum and pedagogy;
  • Understand students as diverse learners of mathematics with a variety of learning styles; and
  • Be proficient in the procedures and practices of professional development.

On average, students complete this program in one and one-half academic years.

Admission Requirements


Prospective students must:

  1. Be certified as a teacher of childhood education, 1-6 or elementary education PreK-6;
  2. Possess a master’s degree;
  3. Have completed 9 to 12 s.h. of college-level mathematics course work with a GPA of 2.75 or higher in understanding mathematics of elementary school including:
     • numbers and operations
     • algebra and functions
     • geometry and measurement
     • data analysis and probability
  4. Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in all graduate course work.

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 18


Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 while in the program. Grades lower than a B- will not be counted toward the Advanced Certificate but will be included in the GPA.

Completion Requirements:


  1. Completion of program requirements;
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all course work; and
  3. Satisfactory completion of an action research project, to be completed in ELED 250B .
