The mission of the Hofstra University MHA Program is to educate men and women for administrative leadership positions in a variety of health services organizations. The 45 to 48 credit program is designed for aspiring and committed professionals who are interested in careers in health services administration in such settings as hospitals, managed care organizations, medical group practices, ambulatory, long-term care, and home health care facilities, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, voluntary agencies, government, for-profit, and non-profit sector organizations. Emphasis is placed on management theories and practices, policy strategies, and financial considerations as they related to health services administration. Effective communication skills and networking with established health professionals are incorporated throughout the program. Students with no health administrative experience complete an administrative internship at a regional health facility.

Conceptually, our program is built on the fundamental belief that the health of populations results from the interaction among many variables including genetic, biological, psychological, emotional, behavioral, cultural, political, economic and environmental factors. The goal of the program is to prepare practitioner-scholars who have the knowledge and resources to create and manage health services effectively, efficiently, and ethically, in order to maximize healthy lifestyles and the health status of populations.

Admission Requirements

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Students with less than a 2.75 GPA may be admitted conditionally pending review of additional academic performance evidence, or acceptable standardized test scores, such as the GRE, GMAT or TOEFL. If additional documentation is required, it will be stipulated at the personal interview or via personal communications. Conditionally admitted students must earn a minimum grade of ‘B’ in each of the first 12 semester hours.

Brief essay discussing career goals, interests, or experiences.

Program Requirements - Semester Hours: 45 - 48

Students with extensive experience in health services as clinicians or administrators may request individualized adjust-ments to the requirements of the program upon the recommendation of the Program Director.

I. Competencies

Four competencies, one in library research skills and three in computing, are required of all M.H.A. students, as listed below. Students will be required to take these workshops during their first year of matriculation unless they meet one of the following waiver criterion: previous competency relevant coursework with a minimum ‘B’ grade; published research or professionally referenced article; letter from supervisor verifying competencies. These courses carry no academic credits toward the M.H.A. degree, and their semester hour designations represent tuition fees.

Transfer Credit

With faculty advisor approval, students may transfer up to 9 credits of equivalent graduate courses from an accredited higher education institution. Course work must have been completed within the last five years with minimum grades of “B.”
