LAW 2972 - Mental Health Issues in Criminal Justice System Deinstitutionalization has created a vacuum for those individuals with mental illness in need of services. As a result, the courts, jails and prisons have become the largest providers of mental health services in the United States. The course will examine issues that impact on the daily practice of those who prosecute, defend, and advocate for people with mental illness who are criminal justice involved. It will focus on issues such as competency, ethical considerations, interdisciplimary practice, psychiatric defenses, involuntary confinement and medication, understanding diagnoses and medication and access to services.
