LAW 3922 - Mediation Principles and Practice

This is a “how-to” course that will train students in the concrete skills and practices of mediation, especially as used in the context of family and workplace conflicts.  The course will include lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and numerous “hands-on” simulation exercises to help students develop the specific skills used by mediators – skills that are also very valuable in many areas of lawyering and client counseling.  The course will explain the underlying principles on which particular mediation skills are based, and will also discuss the ethical guidelines governing mediators.  This 3-credit course will have an enrollment limited to 24 students.   This course carries 3 skills credits.  It is a pre/co-requisite for enrollment in the Mediation Externship, a live-client practicum.
