MASS 132 - War, Peace and the MediaSemester Hours: 3 This course examines the many roles of the mass media during times of war and in periods leading up to armed conflict. Military conflicts and mediated representations of those armed conflicts have evolved considerably over the past several decades, particularly since the end of the Cold War. With the advent and accessibility of new communication technologies now in the hands of those who make, those who oppose, and those who cover war, it is more important than ever to understand how these messages about war and peace are shaped, filtered and disseminated to a variety of publics, and to what potential effect. Students will also be introduced to a variety of contemporary citizen’s media projects that have served as an alternative to major news media in promoting a culture of peace, non-violent resistance to war, and reconciliation.
