AH 192A - Special Topics in Art History
The making and study of art is a nonverbal connection with every culture in history - with the entire range of human experience, thought, and expression. Because of art, students can enter a world of direct experience with the entire human race as it helps them to understand the way people looked and lived and the convictions and rituals that sustained them. Using the permanent collection from the Hofstra University Museum of Art, students will analyze authentic works of art that explore themes of personal identity. Through group discussions, traditional formal analysis, non-traditional writing prompts, and exhibition design, students will examine how visual culture, often shaped by politics, religion, sexuality, race, gender, economics, and the rebellious spirit of artists, represents society and influences our perceptions of one another. Additional field trips to NYC Museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Frick Collection, or the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will supplement the curriculum.
