ENGG 143G - Bioengineering Capstone DesignSemester Hours: 3 Spring
Bioengineering: biomechanics, bioelectricity, and pre-medicine student teams, in this culminating design course, apply their knowledge and experience learned throughout their program to design a device prototype based on safety – International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 10993 Biological evaluation of medical devices, and design – U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Design control guidance for medical device manufacturers and device-specific standards. Related topics are presented as guidance materials. Teams submit a proposal containing a problem statement, requirements including standards and constraints, and a preliminary device design idea with supporting sketches and justification. After revision(s) and approval, the device is 3D modeled, developed, and evaluated. Teams communicate their findings to the Department of Engineering audience in formal oral and poster presentations and through a technical final design report with abstract, improved proposal contents, detailed design drawings, performance evaluation, risk and safety, ethical, global, societal, and environmental impact analyses, limitations, lessons learned, and references.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: ENGG 118 , 165 , 182 and senior standing in Bioengineering. No liberal arts credit.
