HIST177C - Modern Greek History

An Introduction to Modern Greek History and the forging of the Greek Nation state out of the Greek Revolution in 1821–the topic of a current book by the leading historian, Mark Mazower, The Greek Revolution: 1821 and the Making of Modern Europe (Penguin 2021)– to the most current economic crisis in 2009 and its gradual recovery. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of the people they will be encountering and events that shaped their character, as well as their active relationship to their own past, to Europe and to an international community. A packet of texts necessary for this course will be given to students prior to the beginning of the course. There will also be individual/group presentations and a final exam on material covered.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Course may be repeated when topics vary and students may register for multiple courses within this numbering scheme. Ordinarily not open to first-year students. (Formerly HIST 177, Special Studies in History.).
