BIOL 239 - Advanced Coastal Marine Biology

An intensive, field-oriented course covering the biological, chemical, geological, and physical features of coasts and seas. Lectures and fieldwork emphasize the taxonomy, ecology, and behavior of marine species from habitats such as coral reefs, mangroves, mudflats, rocky shores, salt marshes, and sandy beaches. Students will employ sampling techniques to study factors that influence the abundance and distribution of marine species. Primary scientific literature will be used to critically evaluate the ecological role and adaptations of species in the major habitats of the selected geographic region for the course.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Permission of instructor. The fee varies depending on the location and content of the course.

Credit is given for either BIOL 239, BIOL 139, or BIO 204. (Formerly, BIO 204)
