COUN 253 - Mental Health Counseling Practicum


Semester Hours: 3


Fall, Spring, Summer

This course is designed to prepare the mental health-counseling trainee to function in the field. Experiences during the course will expose the student to practical counseling skills, case management skills, diagnostic skills, observations, readiness assessment, effective problem solving, goal development, and supervision. Legal, ethical, diagnostic, and multicultural issues will be discussed. Students are required to log 100 hours of practicum experience. Supervised placement in a clinically oriented setting will be utilized in this course to help begin the development of rehabilitation and mental health counseling competencies.

In the seminar, students will collaborate with peers and faculty in an effort to deliberate about their fieldwork as well as deal with issues related to their own professional development. Through their readings and assignments, students will be exposed to techniques, skills, and theories that influence practice in their field setting. Students will employ assessment skills, treatment planning, and counseling skills while also being exposed to current research literature for selected topics.
