LING 206 - Sociolinguistics Semester Hours: 3
Fall
This course investigates how language shapes and is shaped by society. It focuses on two major approaches: quantitative sociolinguistics (analysis of language variation and change) and pragmatics (analysis of language in context, how people derive meanings from both context and the linguistic signal). Students will then apply these theories to the analysis of forensic linguistic evidence and spoken or written interactions with civil or criminal implications.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: May not be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
