CSPM 216 - Clinical Practicum III Semester Hours: 4
This course is part of two courses designed to provide perfusion students with an intensive opportunity to develop, practice, and master the skills required to perform safe extracorporeal circulation procedures. These clinical practice courses require directed hands-on use of equipment and techniques that constitute cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. Under the direct supervision of a clinical instructor, the students are exposed to increasing levels of responsibility in the clinical conduct of perfusion. As the students’ abilities permit, they assume expanding responsibilities with the ultimate goal of functioning independently as practicing perfusionists. This course provides an opportunity to advance clinical skills in cardiovascular/perfusion medicine. The third clinical practicum series will review moderate complexity scenarios, including troubleshooting complex techniques, creating systematic plans of care, and developing critical decision making. Learners will acquire the fundamental skills, algorithms, and processes to solve problems competently. The course will allow students to develop situational operating room (OR) awareness and effective communication in the cardiac surgery suite and reinforce sequencing events for problem-solving during a cardiac procedure. At course completion, the student will have developed sufficient clinical competency about the rudiments of the extracorporeal circuit, its components, design, assembly, and operation of the equipment. Under directed supervision, successfully perform those technical manipulations that constitute the essential part of the extracorporeal circuit and other perfusion procedures.
