JRNL 223 - Frameworks of Investigative Journalism

This course takes students beyond the newsroom and offers the practical tools necessary for mastering investigative journalism as a form: seeking out and engaging a range of credible sources, presenting and verifying facts, and sharpening the inquiry and interpretive skills needed for producing thorough, independent journalism that shines light on important stories. Through the assigned readings, classroom instruction, story assignments, and a variety of professional guest speakers, students will learn how to approach, with ethical principles, their subjects and story ideas. The course will also critically examine the role of investigative journalism in a democratic society by reviewing historic and contemporary case studies of some of the seminal work produced in this field, both in the U.S. and abroad.
