NAP 302 - Advanced Evidence-Based Principles of Nurse Anesthesia Practice: Obstetrics, Gynecology, Gyno-urology and Pediatrics

Semester Hours: 4

This course builds upon knowledge gained in prerequisite courses to apply that knowledge to a comprehensive study of the anesthetic management of gynecologic, gyno-urologic, pediatric, and obstetric patients. The anatomic, physiologic, and psychosocial characteristics that distinguish the pediatric patient from the adult patient are explored, focusing on how psychosocial and cultural differences influence anesthetic care. Co-requisite knowledge of local, regional, and general anesthesia will be applied to the pediatric, urologic, gynecologic, and obstetric patients. The anatomical, physiological, and psychosocial changes of the gyno-urologic system, reproductive systems, uretero-placental, and fetal physiology and their impact upon anesthetic management will be explored. Utilizing a case-based systems approach, common, pathologic, and pathognomonic surgical conditions in pediatrics, gynecology, gyno-urology, and obstetrics will be explored. Research, evidence, and data will be translated to planning culturally competent, ethical, safe, and effective anesthetic care for gyne-urologic, gynecologic, parturient with a fetus, and pediatric patients undergoing elective or emergent surgery, and in the provision of labor analgesia. Special emphasis will be placed on recognizing, evaluating, and appropriately managing physiologic responses and complications that occur during the delivery of anesthesia care for gynecologic, gyno-urologic, pediatric, and obstetric patients. The course is a co-requisite to NAP 301 allows the student to integrate advanced physiologic and nurse anesthesia knowledge, skills, and critical thinking into clinical practicum. A failure in NAP 302 will result in a course failure in the co-requisite NAP 303.
