NAP 311 - Advanced Evidence-Based Principles of Nurse Anesthesia Practice: Cardiovascular/thoracic and Neurosurgical Anesthesia

This course builds upon knowledge gained in prerequisite courses to apply that knowledge to a comprehensive study of the anesthetic management of cardiovascular/thoracic and neurosurgical patients. Co-requisite knowledge of invasive and noninvasive monitoring, diagnostic procedures, local, regional, and general anesthesia will be applied to adult and pediatric cardiovascular/thoracic and neurosurgical patients. The anatomical and physiologic changes within cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and neurovascular systems and their impact upon anesthetic management will be explored. Utilizing a case-based systems approach, common, pathologic, and pathognomonic surgical conditions in cardiovascular/thoracic and neurosurgical patients will be analyzed. Research, evidence, and data will be translated into planning culturally competent, ethical, safe, and effective anesthetic care in the provision of increasingly complex cardiovascular, thoracic, and neurosurgical anesthesia cases. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing, evaluating, and appropriately managing physiologic complications that occur during the delivery of anesthesia care for neurosurgical and cardiovascular/thoracic patients. The course is a co-requisite to NAP 311 allows the student to integrate advanced physiologic and nurse anesthesia knowledge, skills, and critical thinking into clinical practicum. A failure in NAP 311 will result in a course failure in the co-requisite NAP 313.
