OTH 231 - Occupational Engagement and Performance: Older Adults
Semester Hours: 3
This course examines the range of occupational therapy practice with older adults and identifies strategies that support productive aging and engagement in meaningful occupation across the spectrum of ability. Major life roles and occupations of older adults are investigated. The biological, social, and psychological aspects of aging are explored. The cultural diversity of the older adult population and the ethical aspects of working with the older population are studied. Emphasis is on occupational therapy evaluation and intervention across practice settings for conditions commonly associated with the aging process. Issues related to chronic disease management and terminal illness are explored. The role of occupational therapy with the well elderly and the elderly within the community is also emphasized. Aspects of aging in place, home modifications, wellness, and health promotion for the older adult are analyzed.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
Successful completion of all first-year courses.
