HADM 243 - Health Services Strategic Planning Semester Hours: 3
This course provides an in-depth study of the principles and processes of strategic planning. This is an elective, advanced course that builds upon concepts and skills students have been exposed to in their prior courses. At the same time, the focus of the course is likely to be different from most management courses. The strategic planning process seeks to provide the organization with an understanding of both internal and external factors likely to affect the development of effective pathways to organizational success. Strategic planning is an iterative and ongoing process, not a stagnant document, which on an ongoing basis, an organization seeks to determine what it needs to do to be successful in the long term.
Students will be exposed to the elements of recognized strategic planning models, which utilize data-driven approaches in both plan development and monitoring implementation success as input for strategic plan modification. However, data is neutral, and students will learn how to transform data into useful information, in the development of effective strategies. Students will learn that successful strategic planning requires an organization-wide effort, rather than being confined solely to senior administration. Students will learn too that input from customers and stakeholders can play an important role in strategic planning development.
