ANTH 148 - (BH,CC) Mind, Culture, and SocietySemester Hours: 3 This course is an introduction to the field of cognitive or psychological anthropology with a focus on aspects of culture and cognition in societies of the Global South. Psychological anthropologists seek to understand the relation between the personal and the social and cultural. As such, the field is an interdisciplinary endeavor to uncover what is universal and particular in human behavior and social organization and to question theoretical assumptions about “culture” and “mind.” The foundational concepts, theories, and methods of cognitive anthropology will be examined in the first part of the course, and then we will explore a range of topics, including folk taxonomies, kinship and family, religion and healing, environment and space, social movements, and ethnomathematics.
